Only 15 new coronavirus cases in last 24 hours, continuing trend of lowering numbers

Thailand’s government said on Friday that it had discovered 15 new coronavirus infections bringing the total number of infected to 2,854.

The 15 new cases continues the trend of sub 20 cases, the lowest trend since the outbreak began. The government is now seriously considering a partial re-opening of the country in May, Thai Enquirer understands.

There were no new fatalities with the death toll still at 50.

60 more patients have recovered from the virus bringing the total number of discharged patients to 2,490.

Only 314 patients remain in hospital with the virus

“This is something to be very encouraged by,” said government spokesman Dr Thaweesin Visanuyothin. “I want to thank the public for following the government’s guidelines.”

Stepping up tests

The government has said this week that it would start stepping up testing and moving from focused testing to ‘active testing.’

On Friday, Dr Thaweesin said that Thailand was testing over 2,000 cases per day and that it had the capacity to test 20,000 per day in 123 testing centers all over the country.

There have been questions from the public sector on whether Thailand’s low numbers were due to the lack of testing. Dr Thaweesin said that the government planned to answer those questions.
