Opinion: If you netizens actually want change, then get up off your ass

On Friday, a human rights lawyer and a student were arrested on sedition charges by the police for peacefully calling for democratic reform.

They were eventually released on bail after a protest in downtown Bangkok, with more than 1,000 people participating.

But questions still remain that we must answer as a society.

Were the two men (and the 30 others wanted by police) beyond their constitutional right in making speeches?

How were they instigating people to disrupt the peace when what they were doing was simply pointing out what they saw as injustices in this society?

Overthrowing an elected government is more of a treasonous act than pointing out that the current government is illegitimate, the social contract that people were forced to accept is deeply undemocratic, and Prayut’s administration is harassing civilians.

Judging from the viral tweets and the keyboard warriors ready to jump on the cause, a lot of Thais agree that there is something deeply wrong with the current state of affairs.

So the question now is, how can you still sit there at home?

What the Junta is trying to do right now is to cut the head of a snake to stop the momentum of the student protests by getting rid of their leaders.

The way to show them that it will not work is by coming out in bigger numbers.

If you just sitting at home and writing comments against this government on your social media, the government will not hear you, it will not stop activists from going to jail either.

Wear your mask and go join them.

In a just society, there is an essential relationship between the equitable distribution of wealth, justice, and economic opportunity for everyone. In a functioning social contract, there must be no lies and injustice.

This government certainly does not care about the vast majority of the people living in the country, it is instead focused on the privileged few, just ask the red bull heir.

To top it off, they’ve now started arresting dissidents.

And still, you sit at home?

If you do not see the social injustice in this society where most people live under 300 baht per day while coup-makers and their business supporters are enjoying nothing but riches then I am sorry, you are blind. Nothing can help you there.

For those who are starting to see it, stop commenting about it, come out to support the students. At least you can say that you tried then instead of just watching from behind your smartphones.

In the end, it is your choice if you want things to change.

Just simply sitting on your ass will do nothing.

To quote the immortal James Brown, “Get up offa that thing!”
