Legal group to march on parliament after gathering more than 100,000 signatures calling for charter amendment

The legal group the Internet Dialogue on Law Reform (iLaw) will march on parliament today to submit a motion to amend the constitution after gathering over 100,000 signatures in support.

iLaw has held constitutional forums for the past few months seeking public input on the charter and what needs to be amended.

The group has also canvassed for signatures at pro-democracy protests in support of its ‘people’s constitution.’

It needed 50,000 to pass the required amount for citizens to submit a bill to parliament. It has now received 100,732 signatures.

Among the clauses in the constitution that iLaw aims to amend are those related to the military-appointed senate, specifically the provisions that allow the unelected senate to vote for the prime minister.

One of the central goals of recent pro-democracy demonstrations has been a rewriting of the charter, which protesters say is undemocratic and put in place by the previous military junta.
