New hashtag trends on Twitter ahead of October 6 anniversary

The hashtag #6ตุลา (6 October) trended on Thai Twitter on Monday as netizens addressed the upcoming anniversary of the Thammasat University massacre 44 years ago.

So far, the hashtag has already been mentioned over 32,000 times on Twitter.

On 6 October 1976, the Thai police and right-wing paramilitary forces violently cracked down and opened fire on university students on the lawn of Thammasat University, officially killing 46 and injuring over 100. The real toll is likely much higher according to experts.

Over four decades later, no proper investigation has been conducted behind the killings and no perpetrators have been brought to justice. The reasons and events of 6 October 1976 remain ambiguous, not discussed or talked about in the Thai mainstream or education system.

October 6 has been cited by student protesters over the past three months as an example of what the Thai military and Thai state does to activists and young people fighting for their freedom.

An event to commemorate the October 6 will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Thammasat University’s Tha Prachan campus.
