New hashtag trends on Twitter following possible media shutdown in Thailand

The hashtags #savefreemedia and #saveสื่อเสรี are now trending on Twitter Thailand on Monday as netizens have come out to express their frustration following the government’s investigation and possible shut down of several prominent Thai news outlets — The Standard, Prachathai, Voice TV, and The Reporters.

The government has also ordered the activity group Free Youth Thailand to stop their live broadcasts.

Citing the latest Emergency Decree, the government alleged that such reports affect national security and violate the emergency decree.

“Such reporting may contain information that causes fear and misinformation among the public during the emergency decree, impacting the national security and peace of Thailand,” said the statement put out by the government.

The announcement caused the hashtag #saveสื่อเสรี to spread and go viral on social media with already 196k tweets on Twitter.

“Oh.. my dear government you have just proved to the world that we are not the democratic country,” one Twitter user wrote.
