New hashtag supporting pro-democracy celebrities trends on Twitter Thailand on Tuesday

A new hashtag, #สนับสนุนดาราประชาธิปไตย (We support celebrities for democracy), is now trending on Thai Twitter on Tuesday as netizens come together to support the various Thai celebrities who have publicly declared their political stance alongside the pro-democracy movement.

The new hashtag came following a series of boycotts, bans, and trends by netizens who called out and publicly shamed celebrities that were either politically apathetic or opposed to the protests.

Over the past months, celebrities have faced scrutiny and immense pressure to publicly participate and speak of the movement.

Celebrities who have been vocal about their support for the pro-democracy protests, from the likes of actress Intira “Sai” Charoenpura, childhood sensation Focus Jeerakul, to Miss Universe Thailand 2017 Maria Poonlertlarp, have all had their careers affected because of their political involvement.

Chaiamorn Kaewwiboonpan, or better known as Ammy Bottom Blues, has been performing and speaking on various pro-democracy protests in Bangkok and across the country. Last month, he was detained and arrested by state police for over 20 days alongside protest leader Pai Daodin. Upon his release, Ammy rejoined the protests once again.

Pro-democracy celebrities have stood their ground and expressed that they were willing to risk their career for the future of the country.

Netizens have come out to publicly stand with the celebrities by encouraging others to support them and their careers with the hashtag. So far, #สนับสนุนดาราประชาธิปไตย has already garnered over 160k Tweets.
