[Update-2] Thailand discovers 212 new coronavirus cases, 193 local infections on Saturday

Thailand discovered 212 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said on Saturday.

The new discovery brings the total to 10,053 since the start of the pandemic while 5,546 have recovered from the infection.

Of the 212 new cases, 187 were found in the general population while six were found via pro-active screening. Of the others, 14 were found in quarantine facilities, and the remaining five were illegal entries.

There were no new fatalities, leaving the death toll at 67 people.

Twenty-eight provinces have been placed in partial lockdown or “highly controlled areas” with five provinces now under the strictest level of Covid-prevention measures, namely Samut Sakhon, Rayong, Chonburi, Chanthaburi and Trat.

Traveling between these provinces is still possible but checkpoints are now installed to discourage people from traveling in and out of these 28 provinces.

Travellers will be asked to provide details about their travel information and get their temperature checked at these checkpoints.

Travellers from the five “strictest-controlled” provinces who wish to travel between provinces will also require permission from local authority before they can travel.

Total numbers

Of Thailand’s 10,053 cases, 7,933 were found locally. Of the 7,933 cases, 2,748 were found via pro-active screening.

Of the 2,120 imported cases, 1,573 were found inside quarantine facilities, with the remainder including people who illegally entered the country.

Two hundred and ninety-one people have recovered in the past 24 hours, which brings the total of confirmed recoveries to 5,546 people while 4,440 people are still being treated.

Clusters and provinces

Of the 187 cases that were found in the general population in the past 24 hours, the highest numbers were found in Samut Sakhon (46), Chonburi (40), Samut Prakan (29), Bangkok (27) and Ang Thong (18).

Of the six cases that were found via pro-active screening, four were found in Bangkok and one each in Nonthaburi and Nong Bua Lam Phu.

With the addition of Nong Bua Lam Phu the second wave of outbreak, which began in Samut Sakhon on December 18, has now spread to 58 provinces.

Of all 5,565 cases that were found between December 15 and January 9, 3,363 cases were related to the Samut Sakhon cluster while another 473 cases were related to the Rayong cluster.

Samut Sakhon continue to be the hardest-hit province with 3,188 cases since the second wave began. This was followed by Chonburi (514), Rayong (429), Bangkok (397), Samut Prakan (238), Chanthaburi (204) and Nonthaburi (108).
