[Update-2] Thailand discovers 245 new coronavirus cases, 224 local infections on Sunday

Thailand discovered 245 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said on Sunday.

The new discovery brings the total to 10,298 since the start of the pandemic while 6,428 have recovered from the infection.

Of the 245 new cases, 181 were found in the general population, 43 were found via pro-active screening and 21 in quarantine facilities.

There were no new fatalities, leaving the death toll at 67 people.

Total numbers

Of Thailand’s 10,298 cases, 8,157 were found locally. Of that, 2,791 cases were found via pro-active screening.

Of the 2,141 imported cases, 1,594 were found inside quarantine facilities, with the remainder including people who illegally entered the country.

Eight hundred and eighty-two people have recovered in the past 24 hours, this brings the total of confirmed recoveries to 6,428 people while 3,803 people are still being treated.

Clusters and provinces

Of the 181 were found in the general population in the past 24 hours, the highest numbers were found in Samut Sakhon (50), Chonburi (39), Samut Prakan (19), Bangkok (16), Rayong (15), Lopburi (8), Pathumthani (7), Chanthaburi (6) and Chiang Mai (5).

Of the 43 cases that were found via pro-active screening, 23 were found in Samut Sakhon, the remaining were found in Chonburi (10), Bangkok (6) and Samut Prakan (4).  

The second wave of outbreak, which began in Samut Sakhon on December 18, has now spread to 58 provinces.

There are currently nine provinces which had discovered more than 50 cases while 19 provinces, which have discovered cases in the second wave, have not reported any new case in the past 19 days. A province can be considered as covid-free if there is no new case bring reported there for 28 days.

Of all 5,866 cases that were found between December 15 and January 10, 3,441 cases were related to the Samut Sakhon cluster while another 560 cases were related to the Rayong cluster.

Samut Sakhon continues to be the hardest-hit province with 3,261 cases since the second wave began. This was followed by Chonburi (567), Rayong (521), Bangkok (419), Samut Prakan (261), Chanthaburi (210), Nonthaburi (109), Nakhon Pathom (75), Ang Thong (54) and Pathumthani (46).
