The hashtag #saveคริษฐ์ (save Krist) was trending Monday over the latest charges brought under Section 112, this time against an 18-year-old activist for taking part in an anti-government rally in late 2020.
The student from Nakhon Pathom, nicknamed Krist, spoke on stage at the rally at the Lat Phrao Intersection in Bangkok on 27 November. He allegedly touched on the subject of freedom of speech and the lese-majeste laws in Thailand.
The activist was called in to the Phaholyothin Police Station on Monday to hear the charges, where he was detained.
Netizens took to Twitter and other social media to draw attention to the detention and highlight what they called the excessive use of the strict lese-majeste laws by the government and police, especially given the accused’s age in this case.
The hashtag had been used 161,000 times on Twitter by Monday afternoon.
