Photo Essay: A day of protest, a night of violence

Protesters gathered in Bangkok on Sunday to mark 15 years since a military coup overthrew the government of Thaksin Shinawatra. Protesters marked the anniversary with symbolic gestures and speeches – many pointing to the cycle of political violence and instability since the coup.

The protest move throughout the city on a rain-soaked day eventually giving way to a small but violent confrontation with security forces in the evening.
