Opinion: Thai fight over pro-establishment song shows generation divide

Royalists and soldiers are allegedly being asked to click like on a new song that celebrates the royal institution by Artiwara “Toon” Kongmalai. The move came after the number of YouTube users unliked the video prompting a campaign by royalists to boost the number of likes.

This was the first time that any song sang by Toon, the lead singer of Bodyslam, had been disliked more than liked in this country.

He is beloved by millions of fans and has been staying out of the ongoing social and political conflicts until the release of this song.

It was not heavily promoted at all, unlike many of his other songs in the past, and given the current political climate, it was not a surprise. Still, it is interesting to see one of Thailand’s biggest rock stars having to canvas for likes online.

Royalists like Bin Bunluerit have even posted on Facebook about the issue and calling for people to like the song.

What the pro-establishment people fail to understand is that most of the new generation no longer wanting to hear the same tired messages and it is the new generation that are much more internet savvy. That is why they cannot win this battle.

And rest assured the moment they realize they cannot win the battle, they will attempt to silence everyone with draconian laws.
