The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) launched a trial period for its national mobile ID project on Friday.
The regulator has for the past four years been working to develop this project with public and private agencies such as the Bank of Thailand, the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the Revenue Department, the Department of Land Transport (DLT), Social Security Office (SSO), National Telecom, Advanced Wireless Network (AWN), True Move H Universal Communication, dtac TriNet, Bangkok Bank and CP All.
A smaller trial service was launched by AWN and Bangkok Bank in 2019 and the system is now ready for large-scale testing, the NBTC said.
“Customers can now ask for their mobile ID from all network providers without any charges,” said Suthisak Tantayothin, Deputy Secretary-General of the NBTC.
“All network providers can now work with public agencies and platforms to develop and provide more services in the future,” he said.
A mobile ID can be used instead of physical cards such as a national ID.
For example, the small trial service allowed AIS customers to use a QR code to open bank accounts with Bangkok Bank instead of using their national ID.
The QR code contains personal information such as names, national ID numbers, phone numbers and photos.
For the larger scale, the mobile ID can be used for other banking activities, paying your taxes via e-filing and asking for public and private services such as acquiring an electronic driving license from the DLT and accessing SSO’s benefits. These services are expected to be launched within the first quarter of 2022.
The NBTC is also hoping that the system will support nano-finance operations, reduce loan shark problem that has been plaguing low-income earners.
