Same-sex marriage decision enflames internet outrage

When Thailand’s Constitutional Court issued its ruling, Thai netizens took to Twitter over Thursday night to support the LGBTIQ+ community.

The court declared that the purpose of marriage is reproduction, hence same-sex marriage is against the natural order.

As a result, LGBTIQ+ supporters took to the internet to vent their anger on the court with the hashtag #ศาลรัฐธรรมนูญเหยียดเพศ [The Constitutional Court is discriminates based on sex].

Internet users pointed out that while Thailand promotes the country as a gay-friendly paradise, the court is embroiled in archaic thinking by defining marriage as only between a man and a woman.

As a result, the LGBTIQ+ community is just a tool to drive the economy and not even beneficiaries of Thailand’s growth, internet users argued.

Net users also noted that all eight judges who ruled on the bill are men. And it’s controversial that LGBTIQ+ love is being judged by people who don’t understand what it is.
