Taiwanese actress accuses Thai police of corruption, extortion

A Taiwanese actress made the news in Thailand this week after she claimed that she was forced to pay a bribe by Thai police during her visits to Bangkok at the beginning of January.

The actress warned others to be careful while visiting the country.

An Yuqing, or Charlene An, wrote on her Instagram account that her taxi was stopped by police in Bangkok and she was forced out of the cab.

The police conducted a body search and searched their pockets, bags and wallets before asking about visas, she said.

Her visa was a visa on arrival but the police said that the VOA was unacceptable and it must be printed onto the passport with an official emblem only, Charlene said.

The group recorded a video of the search but the officers told them to delete it, she said.

She begged the officers to let them go and the negotiation took around two hours before a police officer took her aside and demanded 27,000 baht.

After she paid the police, the officers called a taxi for them and let them go, Charlene said.

She said there were also five other women from Korea who were also stopped at the checkpoint and she was unsure if they were being forced to pay a bribe as well.

“I will never go back to Thailand and I would like to warn Taiwanese people that they should be careful when they are visiting Thailand and do not carry a lot of cash in their wallets,” she said.

Her story made the news in Taiwan and went viral in Thailand this week.
