Thailand still in bottom half of new corruption perception index

Thailand’s overall score and ranking on Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) improved by one point and nine places but the country continued to still rank in the bottom half of the globe.

The index measures how corrupt each country’s public sector is perceived to be by experts and business people.

The country’s score increased from 35 points in 2021 to 36 in 2022 with zero being most corrupt and 100 as least corrupt. Its ranking improved from 110th to 101st out of 180 countries.

According to the CPI, the least corrupt country was Denmark with a score of 90 points followed by Finland and New Zealand at joint second (87) then Norway (84) and Singapore (83).

The global average score is 43 and more than two-thirds scored below 50.

Overall ASEAN countries ranked poorly. Malaysia came in second in the region with 47 points at 61st place followed by Vietnam (42 points / 77th), Thailand (36 points / 101st), Indonesia (34 points / 110th), the Philippines (33 points / 116th), Laos (31 points / 126th), Cambodia (24 points / 150th) and Myanmar (23 points / 157th).

Thailand has steadily declined in the ranking since General Prayut Chan-ocha staged a military coup with a promise to get rid of corruption, Thailand’s ranking was at 85th place with 38 points in 2014.
