The Taling Chan Criminal Court sentenced a 26-year-old internet user to three years in jail for selling yellow duck-themed calendars on a social media platform because they were judged to have resembled the monarch.
The sentence was later reduced to two years without parole for cooperation.
The court said the ducks in the calendars that were sold on the Ratsadon’s Facebook page were made to resemble the King to mock him.
Even though the ducks were not made to look like the King or named after him, certain phrases and actions that the ducks made could be interpreted as impersonations of the monarch and members of his family, the prosecutor said.
According to the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, 233 people were prosecuted for royal defamation since November 2020.
