Dear Pheu Thai,
As we move beyond a year of political transition, it is time to prioritize effective governance by placing the right people in the right positions.
Forming a government with parties holding diverse ideologies requires both skillful negotiation and compromise. However, the country can no longer tolerate ineffective management by individuals lacking the necessary expertise.
The current state of affairs is alarming: Thai education is underperforming, debt levels are high, non-performing loans (NPLs) are increasing, farmers are struggling, factories are closing, unemployment is rising, and both floods and droughts persist. Air pollution remains a concern, our economy relies heavily on exports and tourism, and corruption is still widespread.
In a democratic society, it is vital that we appoint individuals who are genuinely qualified for their roles. We cannot afford to place a police officer in charge of the Ministry of Education, an inexperienced person in charge of environmental issues, or someone with ties to organized crime in positions meant to combat such activities. Individuals with a history of criminal activity should also be excluded from government roles to maintain public trust.
We need leaders who have the relevant experience or knowledge in their fields. At a minimum, we need proactive and capable individuals who can address the challenges their ministries face effectively. They should be focused on solving problems and advancing policies, rather than merely attending ceremonial functions and making speeches.
Currently, discussions about the new cabinet focus more on political allocations and party interests rather than on the real qualifications of the candidates. This approach risks perpetuating outdated political practices, which could hinder meaningful reform.
True democratic reform requires a commitment to appointing qualified individuals and ensuring they are equipped to drive positive change. With elections still three years away, it is crucial that those appointed are competent and dedicated to upholding democratic principles and addressing the nation’s pressing issues.
As Pheu Thai forms the new government, it is essential to prioritize candidates’ real qualifications and their ability to implement effective policies. While past convictions must be considered for transparency and integrity, the primary focus should also be on selecting individuals capable of fostering real progress and benefiting the public.
Making informed and thoughtful appointments will not only address current challenges but also enhance the party’s reputation and effectiveness. This will help ensure that democratic values are upheld and that the government can serve the people effectively.
