Thai Enquirer spoke with Airports of Thailand (AOT) President Kerati Kijmanawat in a two-part interview on the company’s efforts to make airports more sustainable, focusing on carbon reduction measures and the use of biometric technology to enhance seamless travel.
In the first installment, we explore how Thailand’s leading airport operator is working to cut carbon emissions.
AOT is implementing measures to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability across its operations. As part of its commitment to the United Nations’ sustainability goals, AOT aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions within the next seven years. Key initiatives include transitioning to solar power at its terminals, with a 20-megawatt solar panel installation at Suvarnabhumi Airport, and plans to expand this to all six AOT airports.
AOT is also working with airport service providers to replace diesel vehicles with electric ones, with a mandate for all newly acquired vehicles at AOT airports to be electric. Additionally, AOT is in discussions with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) to introduce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blends by the end of 2026.
In terms of waste and water management, AOT is aiming for zero waste disposal and implementing a closed-loop water treatment system. The organization is also addressing environmental concerns such as noise and air pollution in collaboration with surrounding communities and airlines.
