Thailand confirms 50 more cases of Covid-19; Italy death toll surpasses China

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health confirmed on Friday 50 more coronavirus cases bringing the total number of cases in the country to 322.

Of that number 41 cases were related to previous outbreak sites including a boxing stadium and entertainment venues in Bangkok. Only 9 were new cases, unrelated to previous outbreaks.

According to the ministry, 66 per cent of those infected were male and the age group with the largest number of cases were those between 30-39 years old.

The ministry said that 80 per cent of confirmed covid-19 cases were located in Bangkok.

Prayut orders provinces to respond

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha told reporters on Thursday that provincial governors must manage the quarantine situation within their constituencies or face the consequences.

Prayut has so far refused to shut down the country and close borders, citing the fact that Thailand had not passed into stage-3 of the infection.

Stage-3 is defined as mass person-to-person transmission in multiple regions of the country.

Prayut said that those governors not enforcing social distancing and quarantine in their provinces will be transferred to inactive posts.

Italy death toll surpasses China

Italy’s confirmed death toll from coronavirus has surpassed China’s with 3,405 to 3,248, respectively.

There are now 4 countries in the European Union with over 10,000 cases with Italy being the hardest hit with 41,035.

Spain’s toll has also increased to 18,077.

Outside of the EU, South Korea’s number has slowed down with only 87 cases reported in the last 24 hours.
